Thinking of Retiring?
ONA Voluntary Benefit Program

An Important Message for ONA Members Considering Retirement!
As a Member who is considering retirement, it is important for you to evaluate your need for benefits while you are healthy and actively at work. As a Retiring Member, you need to explore your benefit options, and review your choices prior to retirement.

Retirement is a major step - Upon retirement your current benefits may not be continued, and your employer may not provide a retirement benefit program. Please consider the following important information:

  • Retiring ONA Members may have the option of accessing benefits through their employer at retirement.

  • ONA Retirees also have access to benefits through the ONA Voluntary Benefit Program.

Benefit Information for Members Who Are Preparing For Retirement:
The ONA Voluntary Benefit Program is an important service to our retiring Members. This program provides protection to Members losing benefits through their employer upon retirement. The ONA Voluntary Benefit Program offers Extended Health, Dental, Optional Hospital, Optional Travel, Life Insurance, and Accidental Death and Dismemberment (AD&D) coverage to retiring Members.

Timing is everything!
There is a 60-Day Open Enrollment period available to retiring Members for Extended Health and Dental coverage. Members can automatically enroll in the ONA sponsored Plan, without providing evidence of good health. However, you must apply within 60 days of the loss of coverage from your employer due to retirement, and have been actively at work on the day you lost your coverage.

The ONA Voluntary Benefit Program offers you Extended Health and Dental coverage to meet your needs. You can automatically enroll in these ONA sponsored benefits, without providing evidence of good health for Extended Health, and in the Dental Plan without restriction. However, you must apply within 60 days of the loss of coverage from your employer due to retirement, and have been actively at work on the day you lost your coverage (applies to full-time and part-time retirees). An employer letter supporting your loss of coverage will be required.

Retiring with spousal coverage?
Should you retire with spousal Extended Health and/or Dental coverage and subsequently lose this coverage (through no fault of your own), your application will be accepted without medical evidence, however, you must apply within 60 days of loss of coverage.

You can apply for Extended Health and Dental coverage after the 60-Day Open Enrollment period. However, you will need to provide evidence of good health for Extended Health and your Dental maximum will be restricted for the first 12 months of coverage.
